How the math works
Block weight is a straightforward lookup rather than a shape calculation — each nominal block size has a manufacturer-published weight, and total weight is just that figure times how many blocks you're moving.

The per-block figures used here — 38 lb for a standard 8×8×16, scaling down for narrower or shorter blocks — are typical published weights for normal-weight concrete block. Manufacturers vary slightly, so check a specific product's spec sheet for a load that needs to be exact.
Three weight classes, not one material

Treat these weights as ranges, not fixed numbers — CMU weight shifts with aggregate source, unit configuration, and moisture content. AAC in particular is a large step down in density, not a marginally lighter block — it's worth thinking of as a different material entirely.
A block wall's dead load gets carried by its footing, and that footing is sized against soil bearing capacity — see the footing calculator. So block weight isn't only a delivery and handling question; it's a direct input to how wide that footing needs to be. The rough chain: units per square foot of wall face × unit weight × wall height gives dead load per linear foot of wall. Add grout weight if the cores are filled — a fully grouted wall often carries more weight in grout than in the block itself — plus any tributary load from what's above. Divide that total by the allowable soil bearing value to check against the footing width you're planning. A fully grouted normal-weight wall and a hollow lightweight wall of identical dimensions can impose very different loads on the same soil, which is easy to miss if you're only thinking about block weight as a trucking number.
Before you buy
- Confirm your supplier's pallet count and delivery truck's weight rating before ordering a large quantity — most trucks are rated for a maximum number of pallets, not blocks.
- If you're renting a lift or forklift to move pallets on site, check its rated capacity against the pallet weight, not just the total order weight.
- Ask whether your supplier's quoted weight is for standard or lightweight block — the difference changes both the number here and delivery logistics.
