Material Unit Converters
Move between the units suppliers quote in — tons, cubic yards, cubic feet — without guessing at density by hand.
Convert a tonnage to cubic yards, or cubic yards to tons, for gravel, sand, stone, topsoil or crushed concrete.
The reverse direction — convert a known cubic yardage to tons and pounds, by material.
Why the conversion isn't fixed
A ton is a weight and a cubic yard is a volume, so converting between them depends on density — how tightly a specific material packs into that volume. Gravel, sand, crushed stone and topsoil all weigh different amounts per cubic yard, which is why "how many yards is a ton" doesn't have one universal answer.
Use the tons to cubic yards converter or the cubic yards to tons converter depending on which unit your supplier quoted — both use the same eleven material density figures, so a number checked in one matches the other.
